NASA has some amazing pictures of Saturn, taken from the Cassini satelite. The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency.
This picture was taken almost a month after the planet’s August 2009 equinox. Note the shadow cast on the planet by it’s rings. One pixel represents 156km.

This next pic shows Saturn’s small moon Pan, as it casts a short shadow on the planet’s rings – taken from a distance of approximately 908,000 km away. Image scale is 5 km per pixel.

Amazing, comprehensive and thought provoking is the expansive work of Brent Stirton. Take time to go through all the projects.

Radarboy loves the animated gif. Very much so. And Pink Tentacle has made our day by posting a great set of animated gifs of old Japan. The images were taken from original 3D stereoviews capturing life in Meiji-era Japan by early 20th century photographer T. Enami.

More info and animated gif goodness here, from one of our favourite Japanophile blogs: http://pinktentacle.com/2009/10/animated-stereoviews-of-old-japan/

Bill Sullivan’s “More Turns” is a fascinating collection of images of commuters as they pass through the turnstiles of a subway station.
